Around the world:
- 14,000 under-five deaths occurred every day, an intolerably high number of largely preventable child deaths are dying from preventable diseases. Many of these deaths can be prevented by better nutrition and sanitation, improving the health of pregnant women and new mothers, and providing the required education.
- More than 800 pregnant women and new mothers died every day, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, an unacceptable figure, while maternal mortality can be reduced through adequate health care in the perinatal period as well as the assistance of a professionally trained health workforce.
